Storyline

Directed by Frank Darabont and adapted from Stephen King's serialized 1996 novel, The Green Mile stands as one of the most emotionally profound, spiritually transcendent, and universally acclaimed prison dramas in cinematic history. Set during the height of the Great Depression in 1935 at Cold Mountain Penitentiary in Louisiana, the film follows Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks in a deeply humane, compassionate performance), a veteran death row corrections officer who oversees 'The Green Mile'—the lime-colored corridor leading condemned men to the electric chair. Paul's cynical worldview and agonizing chronic ailment are overturned with the arrival of John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan in an unforgettable, Oscar-nominated breakthrough of gentle vulnerability), a towering, mild-mannered Black man convicted of the horrific rape and murder of two young sisters. Edgecomb and his empathetic fellow guards quickly discover that Coffey possesses an inexplicable, miraculous supernatural power to heal disease, absorb human suffering, and breathe life back into the dead, notably resurrecting a beloved pet mouse named Mr. Jingles. As Coffey's innocent, saint-like nature becomes unmistakably evident, Edgecomb is plunged into an agonizing moral crisis, grappling with the devastating tragedy of executing a true miracle of God in an unjust world. Nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture, The Green Mile blends supernatural allegory, tragic racial injustice, and heartbreaking empathy to deliver an unforgettable masterwork on the cruelty of human society and the enduring grace of the human spirit.
