Gadar: Ek Prem Katha
"A love story born amidst the fury of Partition."
Storyline
Directed by Anil Sharma, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001) is an immortal cinematic milestone and one of the highest-grossing films in Indian box office history when adjusted for inflation, selling over 50 million theatrical tickets and capturing the hearts of millions across the nation. Set against the harrowing communal bloodbath of the 1947 Partition of India, Tara Singh (Sunny Deol in an iconic, career-defining performance of earth-shattering intensity and tender masculinity), a patriotic Punjabi truck driver, rescues Sakina (Ameesha Patel), an aristocratic Muslim woman separated from her family during sectarian riots in Amritsar. Tara protects Sakina, and their bond blossoms into marriage and fatherhood. Years later, Sakina discovers her father, Ashraf Ali (Amrish Puri in a commanding villainous turn), is alive and serving as the Mayor of Lahore, Pakistan. Traveling to Lahore to visit him, Sakina is trapped by her father, who forces her to renounce her marriage and Indian citizenship. Defying international borders and an entire hostile regime, Tara Singh journeys into Pakistan alongside his young son Jeete, unleashing legendary fury—including the immortal hand-pump uprooting scene—to reclaim his wife. With Uttam Singh's golden soundtrack ('Main Nikla Gaddi Leke', 'Udd Ja Kaale Kawa'), Gadar is an epic, emotionally stirring saga of love conquering hatred.
