Biography

Michael Kenneth Mann is a BAFTA Award, Emmy Award-winning, and four-time Academy Award-nominated American director, screenwriter, and producer universally revered as a master stylist and the preeminent cinematic architect of the modern urban crime saga. Raised in Chicago, Mann studied at the London Film School before revolutionizing American television in the 1980s as the visionary executive producer and creator of Miami Vice, introducing pastel color palettes, synthesizer music, and music-video editing to television grammar. He made his feature film debut with the stylish heist classic Thief (1981 starring James Caan) and introduced serial killer Hannibal Lecter to cinema with Manhunter (1986). In 1992, Mann directed the grand historical epic The Last of the Mohicans starring Daniel Day-Lewis. He achieved peak cinematic mastery with the monumental neo-noir crime masterpiece Heat (1995), orchestrating the historic first on-screen pairing of Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, accompanied by the definitive realistic gun battle in movie history. Mann earned three Academy Award nominations for his whistle-blower tobacco industry drama The Insider (1999 starring Al Pacino and Russell Crowe), directed the lavish biopic Ali (2001 starring Will Smith), and pioneered high-definition digital night cinematography in Collateral (2004 starring Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx), Miami Vice (2006), Public Enemies (2009), and Ferrari (2023). Mann's rigorous research, hyper-realistic soundscapes, and existential themes of professional discipline make him an immortal auteur.
